Article 68: What is Transportation Master Data in SAP, and Why Is It Foundational?

Transportation Master Data holds all core information on resources, parties, and constraints that SAP TM and MM use to plan and execute transportation processes.

Why is it crucial?

  • Enables automation: Accurate master data powers the creation of feasible, cost-effective transport plans.
  • Drives compliance: Contains legal, safety, and regulatory info (e.g., license, hazmat).
  • Improves efficiency: Links with MM material and vendor data, making end-to-end supply chains possible.

Key Master Data Objects:

  • Truck Master (Vehicle Resource): Truck type, capacity, registration, maintenance windows, allowable cargo.
  • Driver Master: Driver IDs, qualifications, licenses, shift scheduling, certifications (hazmat, dangerous goods).
  • Cleaner Master (Service Resource): Service providers, cleaning schedules, equipment details for regulated cargos (e.g., food, chemicals).
  • Carrier and Service Provider Masters: Companies offering freight or cleaning, with contacts, ratings, contracts.
  • Location Master: Plant/dock definitions, loading constraints, opening hours.

Linking to MM:

  • Material requirements: Hazmat, dimensions, and packaging drive equipment/resource selection.
  • Vendor/Customer integration: Origin/destination data used for route and FO creation.
