Article 70 - FU

Article 70: What Is a Freight Unit (FU), and How Does FU Splitting Enable Detailed Transport Planning?

Freight Unit (FU): The smallest unit in TM that groups material movements requiring transport. Typically, FUs are created per delivery line or consolidation batch.

FU Split Scenarios:

  • Capacity limit: One delivery too heavy/bulky for a single vehicle ⇒ split into separate FUs for multiple FOs.
  • Multiple destinations: Multi-stop shipments or different customer receiving windows trigger FU splits.
  • Special requirements: Some materials need special handling (e.g., cold chain), so must be separated.

Splitting Process:

  • Happens during planning, as soon as constraints are detected.
  • System decision: Based on rules (max weight/volume, incompatible materials, separate delivery times).
  • User override: For exceptions, planner can manually split/combine FUs.

Why FU splits matter:

  • Ensures transport feasibility (no overloads).
  • Supports legal and customer constraints.
  • Enables flexible cost and resource planning.
